Profit tips

Three ways to tighten up job profit

Quote before the spanners come out

Run the numbers before you book the job, not after. If the margin looks thin, change the quote or the parts.

Track the time it actually takes

Billed hours and real hours drift apart. Knowing the gap shows you which job types to reprice.

Check your parts markup

Parts carry little extra labour, so a small change to your markup moves profit fast.

What's a healthy margin on a job?

It depends on the job. Diagnostics and repairs usually carry more margin than quick services, which earn their keep through volume and follow-up work. Track margin by job type rather than chasing one number.

How do I work out overhead per hour?

Add up a year of costs that aren't tech wages (rent, power, insurance, admin wages, software) and divide by your billable hours. The labour rate calculator does this for you.

Why use the hours a job actually took?

Wages and overheads run on the clock, not the invoice. A job billed at 3 hours that took 4 still cost you 4.

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is profit as a share of cost. Margin is profit as a share of price. A 50% markup on parts is a 33% margin, and a 100% markup is a 50% margin.

Does GST affect my profit?

No. GST is collected for the government, so the calculator works ex GST and shows the GST-inclusive price your customer pays.

How often should I check job profit?

Check a few jobs of each type every month, plus any job that ran over.
